Building on the success of Komatsu trucks at the Lumwana copper mine in Barrick, Zambia, Nevada Gold Mines (NGM) has signed a multi-year agreement with Komatsu to supply 62 Komatsu 930E-5 dump trucks between 2023 and 2025. NGM is the world’s largest single-company gold mining complex, a joint venture between Barrick and Newmont.
The new Komatsu trucks will enter service at two mines in Nevada: 40 will be deployed at the Carlin complex and 22 at the Cortez site. In addition to the vehicles, NGM also purchased several auxiliary equipment from Komatsu.
“Based on the successful implementation of Lumwana, we have decided to update our fleet with 62 new Komatsu trucks,” said NGM Managing Director Peter Richardson. “Komatsu provides us with tremendous regional support, and their team at Elko helps us support our fleet through truck parts repairs, wheel engine upgrade programs, and maintenance and support for the P&H excavators that are part of our business.”
The acquisition of the new fleet in Nevada follows the strong performance of the recently installed fleet of Komatsu trucks and support equipment at Barrick’s Lumwana mine in Zambia. The two companies met late last year at Komatsu Surface Mining’s headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, laying the foundation for a global partnership. Komatsu is committed to building on the success of Lumwana and NGM in partnership with Barrick Group and is pleased to be considered for the company’s Reko Diq project in Pakistan.
“We are pleased to build on the success Barrick has achieved to date through this new collaboration with Nevada Gold Mines,” said Josh Wagner, vice president and general manager of Komatsu’s North American Mining Division. “We will be ready to leverage our advanced and growing Elko service capabilities to support fleet expansion.”
Komatsu is building an approximately 50,000-square-foot warehouse next to its Elko service center to expand local parts support for mining and construction companies in the region. The facility is planned to be commissioned in early 2024. Elko’s 189,000 square foot service center services mining and construction equipment including trucks, hydraulic excavators, electric rope shovels and support equipment.
